The Panasonic AG-1980 and its sister model, the AG-5710, are the professional S-VHS workhorses of their era. If you’ve got one acting up, you’re in the right place — here’s what commonly goes wrong on these decks, and how we set it right.
Noise or lines in the picture, or color that just doesn’t look right, comes down to leaking electrolytic capacitors. Here’s the hard truth: every one of these capacitors will eventually fail — it’s only a matter of time before the problem turns catastrophic. The loading motor drives the mechanism that moves everything into place. On its shaft sits a small nylon coupler, and over time that nylon develops a crack. Once it does, the motor can no longer complete the loading cycle. At first the deck just takes a little longer to load; as the crack worsens, the tape won’t eject at all — and gets trapped inside.
A fading or dead display is capacitor failure again, this time on the display board. Those caps can be replaced, but swapping a few doesn’t cure the underlying problem: ‘bad caps’ run through the entire deck. Doing it properly is part of our Bullet Proofing service.
No power at all? Once more, it’s bad electrolytic capacitors — this time in the power supply.
